Background and history

Prior to the 2nd World War, clinical haematology did not exist as a separate Speciality within the Royal Victoria Infirmary or Newcastle General Hospital.   Haematological investigation began in earnest during the 50’s when Dr C Ungley developed a specific interest in megaloblastic anaemias and B12 deficiency.    His successor, Dr R B Thompson, carried on the haematological interest predominant on Ward 13, (now Ward 8), with an increasing interest in malignant haematology.   Up until this time, the laboratory side of haematology had been conducted in the main pathology laboratory, as a sub-unit, but in 1972, under the direction of Dr W Walker, a new Department was built which is the present laboratory and out-patient area for haematology.    This Department initially housed only NHS personnel with a small number of clinical personnel.   At the end of the 70’s, Dr Proctor moved from the NHS to the University and began the development of the University Department which now currently numbers 36 individuals.  These team members are sited in the Leech Building, Medical School, University of Newcastle.

During the 80’s and 90’s a substantial clinico-laboratory research programme had been established which includes involvement by all regional haematologists and the Newcastle and Northern Region Centre are known nationally as an extremely well organised and productive co-operative group.   The University Department of Haematology has and is anticipated to continue to provide, a central function for the development and evolution of clinical and research haematology for Newcastle, greater Tyneside and the Northern Region.

Marrow Transplant 2000 was set up in the late 1980’s to provide charitable funds to support our research efforts to find the best treatments for malignant blood diseases.    Please note we have no administration charges and use all monies donated on research.
